Elemental- New Paintings by Cheryl Long

ELEMENTAL

Recent landscapes by Cheryl Long

Sept 11-30.

Artist Statement

I’ve spent a lot of my lifetime trying to understand the workings of the elemental aspects of natures voice- water, air, stone and earth - and attuning to the sound and energy of them. In my painting, i strive to recall, from the experience of a certain landscape- how the elements coalesced to become one voice, or an embodiment of one moments expression in time and place. www.cheryllong.ca/

Spirit Dance- Olga Szkabarnicki

Mixed Media Art.

A Choreographed Dance in 2-D

August 21- Sept 9, 2020

Tues-Sat 11-4

Pen and ink in one hand, glass of wine in the other, cat warming my feet, drawing pad on my lap: this is where my Dancer Drawings come to life on wintry nights with the fireplace ablaze. Each Dancer is unique, yet together they share an essential spirit.

Together, they dance.

My Urban Dancers are born of a different space, in my studio, where there is room to move. Hip Hop and World music blasting, dance videos playing, my own movement is fused with ink markers and mixed media on paper.

The Water Dancers move more quietly, intently, responding to mixed media as much as being created by it.

Anthracite, born of my Resurrection series of paintings, presides over the event

Welcome to the Spirit Dance. I invite you to join in.

Artist Bio - Olga Szkabarnicki

Originally from a small farming community in Ontario, Olga practiced Aboriginal law for 20 years, helping to negotiate land claim settlements across the country.  In 2009, Olga returned to her passion for the human figure through the creation of art.  She participated and exhibited in her first juried national competition in 2010 (Figureworks, Ottawa).  She moved, with her husband, to Salt Spring Island in 2016, where she has exhibited in the Parallel show (Salt Spring National Art Prize), the Easter Art Show, the Thrust show; and the Federation of Canadian Artists gallery in Vancouver.

Olga’s figurative work focuses on the transformation of human motion and dance gesture onto a flat surface.  Expressive line in drawings, paintings, and mixed media artwork is created from a solid understanding of anatomy, the rhythms of Olga’s own dance movement, and the influence of music playing at the time of creation.

Since moving to Salt Spring, Olga has expanded her art practice to temperate rainforest surrounding her, which will be the subject of a future show.

Janice Parker- Cut, Press, Pull- Prints

Cut, Press, Pull

Hand pulled linocuts on rag paper

July 31-Aug 19

Wed-Sat 11-4

This show is for the birds!

I love watching birds wherever I might be. This has been a life-long interest. Through the winter and into the spring I played with how to show feathers or to indicate colour blocks. Black on white paper allowed me to look at feathers or space and positioning of the bird. It is all about playing around with the cutting tools and the cutting block then seeing how it comes out in print. Come and enjoy the images I have created. Learn more about Janice Parker

My “Show” is a mix of all types of work and this is where I’m comfortable at the moment !

This is not a deep reflective show but more a show about taking chances, experimenting and always moving forward.

I hope that you enjoy seeing the possibilities and pieces that are the “seeds” of more work in the future !

Perhaps my work will spark something in you, to explore yourself, the endless ways of expressing who you are, through Art.

Be bold and have fun !
