MICHAEL WALL

Since my childhood in the outer suburbs north of London, design has been an essential part of how I understand the world. My father was an engraver and I believe I inherited his graphic sensibility. My interest in art and design directed my journey through my post-secondary education in London. Photography was an interest from an early age, and has been a freely creative refuge from the highly disciplined work of the industrial designer I became. I emigrated to Canada in 1979 and set up a B&W dark room shortly thereafter.

Although photography has been a continuous thread through the years, my discovery of digital photography in 2005 has released a new enthusiasm for the extended creative freedom it offers. My work emphasizes compositional rather than documentary imagery – my designer instincts prevailing. I am also a jazz musician and much of what excites me visually can be described as rhythmic, melodic and improvisational.

I live and work on Salt Spring Island in the Salish Sea of British Columbia. Many of the images shown in this gallery originated in this area.

I exhibit frequently in BC. My work is in collections in Canada, the USA and the UK.
